Privacy Policy

Data collection and usage for the Chrome extension.

Last updated: September 25, 2024

ChatGPT Page Summarizer (“the Extension”) is built with privacy as a core principle. This document explains what data (if any) is collected, how it is handled, and the choices you have.

1. Data We Collect

Page Content
When you activate the Extension, it temporarily reads text and metadata from the active tab to create summaries or answer follow-up questions. This content is processed locally and is not transmitted to us or to any third-party analytics service.

OpenAI API Usage
To generate summaries and answers, the Extension sends the extracted content, your prompt, and relevant conversation context directly to the OpenAI API using the API key you provide. The request goes straight from your browser to OpenAI; we do not proxy, log, or store these requests. Please review OpenAI’s privacy policy for details on how they handle request data.

Local Storage
The Extension stores the following data locally in Chrome’s chrome.storage.local:

  • Your OpenAI API key.
  • Preferred model, theme, and default summary prompt.
  • Cached conversation history per URL so you can reopen the popup and resume where you left off.

None of this information leaves your device. We do not collect personal information, browsing history, or analytics. We do not run any iframe, beacon, or third-party tracking code.

2. How We Use Your Data

  • Provide page summaries and follow-up answers.
  • Offer suggested questions based on the cached conversation.
  • Remember your preferences for a smoother experience.

All operations are carried out locally; no data is sold, shared, or monetized.

3. Data Storage & Security

  • All settings and cached conversations are saved locally in your browser using Chrome’s extension storage.
  • Your API key is stored locally and used solely for requests you initiate.
  • You can remove stored data at any time by deleting the extension, clearing Chrome’s extension storage, or using the Clear Data option if available within the Extension.

4. User Controls

  • API Key: You must supply your own OpenAI API key; you can update or remove it via the Options page.
  • Cache: Cached summaries are scoped to your device. Future versions may offer an in-extension control to clear cache without uninstalling.
  • Settings: Theme, model, and default prompt are fully configurable within the Extension.

5. Third-Party Services

  • OpenAI: Requests for summaries are sent directly to OpenAI’s API. We recommend reviewing OpenAI’s privacy statement to understand how they handle request data and retention.

We do not integrate with analytics, advertising networks, or any other third-party services.

6. Changes to This Policy

If we revise this policy, we will update the “Last updated” date above. Significant changes will be communicated through release notes or the extension listing.

7. Contact

If you have any privacy questions or requests, please contact the developer via the support link in the Chrome Web Store listing.
